Settlers from Sweden who arrived in Montana during the late 19th century brought Swedish
brown beans to North America. These beans are loved for their mildly sweet flavor and are
traditionally prepared as Swedish brown bean soup.
Varieties
Swedish brown beans, also referred to simply as brown beans, are
closely related to black beans.
Buying and storing tips
Look for uniformly shaped brown beans. Like most other dried beans,
Swedish brown beans will keep for up to a year if stored in an airtight container in a cool
dry place.
Availability
Swedish brown beans are primarily available dried in the northern
United States. In areas where they are sold fresh, the season peaks around October.
Preparation, uses, and tips
Prepare Swedish brown beans the same way as other dried beans,
soaking them for several hours before cooking. The rich flavor of this variety makes it ideal
